Diocesan Office of Social Justice Five Year Goals- 2007 to 2011

 

Work to incorporate the Church’s social justice perspective into all aspects of Catholic life in the Diocese, especially social justice formation in Parish Social Ministry.

Objectives:

1.      Promote justice and peace education by offering training in Catholic Social Teaching in the diocese.

 

2.      Offer consultation and assistance in setting up, maintaining, and networking with social ministry groups in parishes throughout the Diocese.

 

3.      Collaborate with other Diocesan offices to achieve the goals of the Diocesan Mission Statement and to work with them in infusing Catholic Social Teaching into the work of education and liturgy.

 

4.      Serve as a catalyst and an ongoing resource to develop Parish Social Ministry and mission efforts, particularly social action components.

 

5.      Coordinate and stimulate legislative advocacy and networks.

 

6.      Develop partnerships with other organizations and Churches in communities throughout the diocese to work on addressing social justice issues.

 

7.      Work with the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Relief Services, and Mandeville Sister Diocese Committee to raise money, allocate local funds, and disperse information about their various programs.

 

8.      Collaborate with Catholic Charities USA, Catholic Conference of Kentucky, and surrounding dioceses to promote justice in the state, nation, and the world.

MINUTES

MARCH 13, 2008

 

PRESENT: Cindy Bornander, Donna Favors, Bernadette Howard, Dick Murphy, Suzanne Rose

OPENING PRAYER: Led by Suzanne Rose

REVIEW MINUTES: The Minutes of January 10, 2008 were approved as written.

OLD BUSINESS:

1.  ST. BENEDICT JOSEPH HOMELESS SHELTER REPORT: A written report from Sr. Suzanne Sims was given to each attendant. The Captain had back surgery and still recuperating. Substitute Captain became ill and other Captain filled in for her also. 

   Served over 1800 beds this season. Served three meals a day for some. Packed lunch for those who needed them and evening meal. Some took food but didn't stay. 

   Planned clean up on April 12th. Celebrate on April 19th with potluck for volunteers and Prayer Service at Noon.

   Donna Favors spoke about Fresh Start Program started to help those released from jail & connect to a Church family. Have Friendship Committee of three people . Mary Oliver will interview. An Explanation Session is scheduled for March 26th at 7 P.M. at Sts Joe & Paul Parish Hall.  This will be to help those interested learn more about Fresh Start.

   Donna Favors said training at St. Pius on Saturday. Three or four focus on one person.

2. MANDEVILLE DIOCESE REPORT: There is a trip planned for Mandeville on May 21-27th. There will be a second trip on October 1-7th. In October there will be a collection of goods.

   Owensboro Diocese has asked about the most pressing needs the Mandeville Jamaica Parishes and Institutions.  Suzanne Rose reminded the group that at lists of needs was also collected in November 2008 by the Sts. Joe and Paul Parish trip.

   Change a life. St. Pius X donation for Mandeville. Priests were charged up from Priest Convocation.

   Sts Joe & Paul will have a group going September 23-29th. Glasses being collected till the middle of April 2008 for the VOSH trip.

3. JUST FAITH PROGRAM 2007-208. Have eight people. Fr. Richard busy & won't be able to join but will join when can.

    Fr. Carl is interested. People are very excited to apply what learned. Inquiry by Fr. Shonis. Will send material to Fr.Pete Hughes. Murray is thinking about doing something and also Mayfield.

4. PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY GUIDE-- PROGRESS/COMMENTS; Progress is slow. Looking at options, training etc.

5. CATHOLICS AT THE CAPITOL 2-11-08 to 2-12-08: Donna said she got information needed to be used. David Boswell, Jim Glenn, Tommy Thompson (talked to them) Talk and leave literature on Partial Birth Abortion, KY Invocations for tomorrow, addressing addictions, Fair tax is progressive taxation.

 In the Fall of 2008, gatherings will be hosted in individual Dioceses.  Representatives and Senators will either be invited to come to meetings or groups will join ongoing Legislative updates.  

   Feb. 24-27th Catholic Social Ministry Gathering. Every State in Union . Six to seven hundred, Representative prepared to talk about poor, pregnant women, Support Housing, Aids relief, Family Planning Clinic (get more money) and Peace in the Holy Land.

 6. CCHD GRANT APPLICATIONS DUE APRIL 15, 2008: Five to Six thousand dollars will be dispensed.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. ISSUES COMMITTEE MEMBERS MAY WISH TO RAISE:

   Suzanne Rose talked about Non-Violent Training as our goal and find four sources of training. Also Food Aid (Haiti) food rotting

   Dick Murphy will contact Joan for idea of what to do.

2. USE OF FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP GUIDELINES FOR 2008:

Dick talked about a workshop on conscience formed.

   Calling all Catholics or Power Point Slide Show to use.

   Forming consciences voter guide and have by May for Primary.

   Faithful Citizenship Forming Consciences. A Bulletin insert & Power Point.

   Third Encyclical - Social Justice Issues.

   April 2nd Town Hall Meeting on March against Poverty and Racism. Adults growing into Faith together. For three years being offered around Diocese.

   Green Energy Roadshow is April 5th at Mount St. Joseph.
