Welcome to the Website for the Office of Social Concerns of the Diocese of Owensboro
"They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry His cross." Mark 15:21 Do you know someone who is burdened with a heavy cross to carry in their life? Perhaps you too have been pressed into service to carry a heavy cross. Like Simon, you were minding your own business, and in a flash you were caught up in a drama beyond your imagination. How shall you respond: with anger at the inconvenience, or with love to embrace the cross? Simon saw the suffering of Jesus, on His way to a terrible death on the very instrument Simon was forced to carry. Perhaps the look of relief in the Lord's eyes, or the appreciation of a kindness rendered touched Simon because we are told that Simon's family was never the same after that. They all came to believe. In fact, Simon's two sons, pillars of the Church, were followers of Jesus. As we embrace the works of charity and justice, let us take heart in this scripture. To embrace the cross will change lives forever, including our own families, and communities.
