Reports and Discussion:
1. Ash Wednesday Collection Scheduled 2-17-10 Results:
The Committee asked whether the collaboration between our Dioceses can continue. Bishop Medley agreed that it can continue, and he was in agreement with the tradition of the Ash Wednesday collection for our Sister Diocese of Mandeville Jamaica. Bishop Medley expressed appreciated for the many gifts shared with us by the Mandeville Diocese. Our people have learned very much about the Church in Jamaica and the needs of the Church in distressed areas of the world through the Mission Immersion Trips. He really appreciated the prayers from our Sister Diocese on behalf of the Diocese of Owensboro.
The results of the Ash Wednesday Collection 2-17-10 going to the Mandeville Diocese was $75,772.56. Bishop Tiedemann sent us a thank you letter for the donation. There is a sum of 7% of the collection kept in the Diocese of Owensboro to help with the costs associated with advertising the collection, scholarships for the Mission Immersion trips, cost associated with the container and other incidentals.
The Priests Council gave authority for the continuation of the Mandeville collection for three years. It may be time once again to seek authorization from them.
2. Mission Immersion Trips:
St. Francis de Sales Parish in Paducah still planned take their May 26 to June 1, 2010 trip.
The Diocese of Owensboro planned trip did not look promising for October 12 to October 18, 2010. An article for the WKC was prepared and submitted to the editor to hopefully run in the May 2010 issue but about 4 people had signed up so far.
3. Collection of Goods; Projected Dates and Place: Cris Green from Food for the Poor agreed to consider sending a container to the Diocese of Owensboro for shipment of a collection of goods in early October 2010. Richard Murphy called in April to learn if it were possible to send one this year. Cris Greene indicated that the Diocese could obtain a container this year, but her expressed hope was that the Diocese would offer some on the container. It did not have to be the whole amount but some would help given the high expense of relief to Haiti.
Srs. Connie and Naomi did solicit their Parishes for their top three needs as was done last time. These needs were shared with the Parishes and groups in the Diocese. As more are added, they will be shared throughout the Diocese. The St. Benedict Joseph Homeless Shelter Annex was available to utilize. Richard shared a copy of the story for the May 2010 issue of the WKC. A bulletin announcement was sent out to the Parishes. It included scheduled work days for the processing and loading of the container. What groups that might be available for assisting with the container were shared and discussed.
4. Report on Pilgrims of Hope Lay Association:
A spring fundraiser event did occur to obtain funds for sponsoring another scholarship to St Vincent Strambi High School. A potential trip by 10 members of the group was a “go” for 9-19 to 9-26-2010. The trip would attempt to increase self-sufficiency for a number of families by teaching farming techniques, supplying seed, and poultry.
5. Presbyteral Convocation Follow Up:
Bishop Medley’s affirmation for the collaboration was much appreciated. There was a clear possibility the Bishop Neil Tiedemann may visit in the fall of 2010. He may stay with Bishop Tiedemann. Visits between Bishops was an important element of the Presbyteral Convocation.
6. Consideration of a Mandeville Mission Immersion Alumni Gathering:
The Committee discussed the possibility of a reunion of those alumni of past Mission Immersion trips at the time of Bishop Tiedemann’s visit. This would be further explored as the time for the visit came.
7. Results of Email to Committee Members on Recommitment:
This was tabled till the next meeting.
8. Other Business Committee Members May Wish to Raise:
Danny May had discussed with Richard Murphy the possibility of sending down bikes collected in the Diocese of Owensboro to the Mandeville Diocese. The committee agreed to use the container for the collection of bikes if they were forthcoming.
The Committee remarked on the productive nature of the meeting and was especially appreciative of Bishop Medley’s remarks.
