What it means to be a Christian woman: my grandmother

By Christy Haire

At eighty years old my grandmother still has an abundance of energy, a heart full of generosity, and a deep faith in her religion. With her black hair up in a bun and her glass on, she fits the normal grandmother description. But she is anything but the typical grandmother. Her name is Lois Knot but somehow over the years she has become known as "Ba" by all her friends and family. She is a remarkable woman who brings much happiness to others.

Ba’s abundance of energy shocks everyone she comes in contact with. She is always ready to go and never gets tired. I’ve seen days where she will go to Louisville and shop from 9:00 AM until 9:00 PM and then there are days when she will work in her garden and can while never tiring. And oh, can she cook! She cooks everything from scratch and everything is always delicious. There are times when there are as many as ten people sitting around her table. But to her, ten people is no more of a problem than cooking for one.

There is not a more loving or generous person than Ba. She is always there for anyone in need. Ba wants her children and grandchildren to be happy and she will do everything in her power so that they are. She is constantly slipping my sisters and I extra money for hamburgers or ice-cream cones at the Dipper. Whenever I am sick, she calls and check on me several times a day and she always knows what will make me feel better--a fresh pan of her homemade biscuits.

Ba’s deep faith in God is what makes her such a special person. She is a devoted Catholic who never misses a day without going to Mass. She is at church everytime the doors open. As a young child I remember being amazed when I saw a grown woman get down on her knees every morning and every night to say her prayers. But even more important about Ba is that she lives her religion. She is always there for anyone in the community who is sick or dying. She is there to comfort those who need her.

There are not enough words to describe how I feel about my grandmother. I admire her and I look up to her for how she has lived her life. She is an example to all people of what it means to be a Christian woman. I only hope when I’m her age I will have the energy she has an be half the person she is.
