OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Kentucky Cancer Program is working in communities across the state to provide a network of cancer control services to the public. Two of the programs include community coalitions to address specific cancer problems and outreach to special populations like migrant workers.

On Saturday, February 9, 2002, an adult education breast and cervical coalition program combined with a day of craft making was hosted by Precious Blood Parish here, for the Hispanic population. Any woman age forty or over that met the 250 % poverty guide lines qualified for a free or low cost mammograms. Sign up sheets were available and given to the Health Department so the women could be contacted later for breast and cervical testing. Grants from the State Department of Public Health provided the funds for the program.

To help get the cancer information to the public it was decided to combine the cancer program with a day of craft making. Crafts like braided rugs and place mats that could be used in the home were made and given to the families or kept to sell at Festivals.

Susan Langan, from the University of Louisville, works with the Kentucky Cancer Program doing breast and cervical cancer education. Deborah Zaborac works with the Owensboro Public School System and is a migrant advocate and teacher that will try to place the children of migrant workers in school. " Some of the children of migrant workers go for long periods of time or fall through the cracks for long periods of time without attending school," she said. Nancy Erdos, a volunteer and former Spanish teacher in Seymour, Missouri helps teach the Spanish and English classes at Bellevue Baptist Church, located on Byers Avenue. Claudia Sedillo works as a translator. Maria Elena Coutant, MD, teaches a breast education program. Others involved in different aspects of the cancer program are Precious Blood Parish, Central Latino, School Migrant Programs, and the Health Department.
