Congratulations! Married 65 years February 23, 2002

Jane- It doesn’t seem like it’s been 65 years since were married, but it doesn’t seem like yesterday either. Time just has a way of slipping by.

Weddings have certainly changed since we got married. We had to wait for the '37 flood water to go down before we could be married at St. Elizabeth’s in Curdsville. Fr. Glenn married us in the most simple ceremony with just our immediate family present. My mother had a breakfast for us afterward. Now days the weddings cost way up in the thousands of dollars and it could be put to better use on down the road, for down payment on a house, maybe.

I grew up the 2nd oldest girl with brothers so I was kept busy. We had to bake our bread, slaughter our own meat-well there was very little store bought. The whole day was spent nearly in food preparation. I also remember standing for hours and ironing my brothers’ "Sunday" shirts. As far as work, I think times have changed for the better.

He (Bernard) grew up thinking you had to have homemade biscuits three times a day...I soon taught him better! He told me my biscuits weren’t as good as his mother’s, so I don’t make them. When he was living at home he would feed the cornbread to the dogs so his mother would make biscuits!

We have three children, 7 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. I worked at G.E. for 33 years. I have worked all my life. I still keep busy working around the house. What would I tell a young couple just getting married? Well it isn’t as easy as it looks. Marriage has plenty of ups and downs. You can’t run from it - you have to stay and figure it out, fuss it out or whatever it takes. It’s a commitment.

We were both raised Catholic. My mother was a very religious person and really believed in prayer. My religion has always played a major part in my life as a child, and in married life.

Bernard- Our first house cost $700 and my dad went the note on it for me. I had it paid off in a couple of months though, which was good back then. I grew up on a farm and I farmed for awhile then I went into carpentry work. I worked for a guy one day shucking corn from early morning to late at night for $2.00. I didn’t go back, either. I got a job at Camp Breckinridge doing carpentry work. I drove to Morganfield everyday, making $2 per hour! That was really something. Gas was only twenty cents a gallon then. I built this house we are in today. I built it in my spare time-weekends, nights and holidays - it took me two years.

I would tell a young married couple today to be aware of your finances. You can get in a bind thinking you have to have everything. Finances can cause problems.

Now, I enjoy just sitting in this chair a lot! I work in the yard in the summer and grow a small garden. Keeping things up is a full time job.

Jane- I really don’t have a hobby. I like to do needlework and do things around the house. I don’t watch much TV. I like my flowers in the summer.

Our greatest blessing is our family - our entire family. His parents and siblings as well as mine and our children.
